Hi,
thanks to all the people who replied to my earlier post re islands.
As header, we need a budget hotel for one night on September 11th in
Athens before returning to the UK. Searching on the web turns up many
hotels within our price range ie around 45 to 50, but many reviews
complain of the <dodgy, scary area> where the hotel is located, usually
close to Omonia square. Is this area really dangerous or just looks it?
Can anyone recommend a budget hotel anywhere else in Athens?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Paul.

What do you mean by that? If you are talking about euros for a double room,
on most of the islands you'd be OK with that but in Athens you're looking at
the very bottom of the budget end of the market. At this price there'll be
some distinctly dodgy places and you do need to be careful. Quite honestly
since it's just for one night I would consider paying twice that (say around
80 - 90 euros) and get somewhere decent.

The area round Omonia Square is full of budget hotels most of which are quite
reasonable but some are not. I've been told that the area immediately to the
north of Omonia (further away from the city centre) has a number of rather
questionable places. Omonia Square itself has always had a rather dodgy
reputation and although it's been cleaned up a bit in recent years, after
dark it still does seem to attract numbers of people hanging around with
nowhere to go and not much to do. I've often walked around there in the
evening though, and never felt particularly threatened or uneasy. I've always
felt that Athens in general is one of the least dangerous or threatening
cities that I know, but that's just my opinion.

Two budget places you could try are the Tempi Hotel
(http://www.tempihotel.gr/). This is in quite a nice area near the centre but
it's quite small and may well be booked up. Also the Pella Inn
(http://www.pellainn.gr/). This is not in as nice surroundings (it's on Ermou
Street with a lot of traffic noise which starts early in the morning) but
it's quite decently run and has good views of the Acropolis.

I share that. I've always stayed in the area and never felt I was in any danger, any time
of the day.

It sounds much better in French, but then, everything does. |
