Has anyone brought a laptop computer on a cruise? I would carry it on and
off and never check it as baggage, but I'm still wondering if it might go
missing from my room?

We are leavng on the Carnival Valor this coming Sunday, and my wife and I
are working on a book as a hobby.

Thanks for Advice,
Joe in Florida

I have taken a laptop many times on cruises. Anything is possible but
it is not likely at all to go missing from your room.

I have taken a loptop and left it in my cabin on the desk in plain view.

No problem for me.

Of the various things that might cause a customer to abandon a cruise
line, missing valuables is near the top of the list - and the lines
select/train/brief their staffs accordingly.

For decades, we've left computers, jewelry, cash, GPS, and other
valuables laying about in plain sight, with never a problem. Even
better, I've never heard of a pilferage report.

Theft by cabin stewards is common. The cruise lines severly undpay these
immigrants and look away when they try to supplement their incomes by
ripping passengers.

I don't like leaving small valuable things lying around in the cabin -
it seems to me like entrapment. Also it seems like there is an
opportunity for non-workers to slip in and steal stuff they see while
the stewards are cleaning the bathroom. So I don't leave cash or
jewelry lying around (I don't even bring jewelry). You don't need
cash on the ship anyway, so I leave any cash in the safe. I've only
brought a GPS once.

But I've brought a laptop on each cruise except the first two which
were in 1950 when there wasn't such a thing. Of course I haven't
been on as many cruises as some here - only 10 not counting those
first two.

I used to put the laptop away in a drawer when I left the cabin, but I
stopped doing that because I figured no cabin steward has enough time
to pick up a laptop - they have too much to do for that.

If the sea is really rough I put the laptop in a secure drawer, and I
don't generally leave it or any electronic devices plugged in when I
leave the cabin.

If you're nervous about it, get a locking cable for it.

Here are some locking cables. Your laptop has a spot on the side to take one
of these, if it is a standard laptop computer:

It takes only a few seconds to slip it into the pushcart.

Their co-steward would have to know. And they would be in SO much
trouble, because we KNOW who they are.

Besides, what could they do with it afterwards? Do they have access
to the wi-fi?

I have actually given my laptop bag to the luggage people to take onto
the ship for me - it wasn't a regular laptop bag though - it looked
like a regular suitcase.

Dear Joe,

I have taken my laptop along on numerous
cruises and have never had a problem. A "used
laptop" is an extremely hard thing to sell, and
for a crew member the possession of such a device
would be very hard to conceal and very, very
costly if found in his/her stuff.
Just make sure you have the details [model,
serial number, etc.] of your computer with your
other items: passport, credit cards, etc. so you
can correctly report it if something does happen.
You are much more likely to have a problem in
an airport or restaurant than on a cruise ship
from your cabin.
Have a great trip,

One of the things most companies suggest when you travel these days is to
not put your laptop in an "obvious" bag. Don't put it in a computer bag.
Stick with something like an ugly, worn back pack. Definitely don't put it
in a bag with a corporate logo on it. If someone thinks your computer
might have corporate secrets on it (new product info, marketing plans, etc.)
it's much bigger target than the value of the unit itself. The person that
said the airport was the much greater risk was most definitely right. Even
the outside (like taxi waiting) areas at the airport. A used laptop is
probably not worth more than $200-300, but info on a new product can be
worth millions. Corporate laptops are the target. Don't do something like
company work on it while in an airport waiting area. That's like making an
announcement.

Your cabin steward won't be the obvious threat... it's the person in the
airport that you never noticed. They can disappear quickly, your cabin
steward can't. Your room will be the safest place for it.

Could they not use your laptop elsewhere? Or sell it?

Dropbox the book and Truecrypt the laptop.

Do you think I would not notice my laptop was gone? Who would be the
first suspect? If the stewards want to keep their jobs, they are not
going to be stealing laptops.
